Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about breastfeeding, antenatal classes, or postpartum care? Below, you'll find answers grouped into categories to help you easily find the information you're looking for. If your question isn't answered here, please feel free to contact me directly.

General Questions

  • Prior to our visit, I will send you a short questionnaire to fill out. This will ensure I have as much info as possible, and we can immediately get started. I bring along a medical-grade infant weighing scale to assess your baby’s growth.

Once I have all the info, I will do an oral examination of your baby’s mouth to ensure no structural issues are present.

Finally, I will observe your breastfeed and provide help with latch, positioning, and other issues you may face.

If you are pumping, I can demonstrate the correct technique for assembling the pump and walk you through a full session.

  •  Bottle rejection is a phase some babies go through, and it can be intimidating for mothers, especially if they are going back to the workforce soon. Together, we can troubleshoot and help your baby return to the bottle.

  • The majority of supply issues come from infrequent and/or inadequate emptying of the breast. I will assess your baby’s latch and/or your pump settings to ensure you are set up for success. I will also provide nutritional advice and can recommend herbal supplements if needed.

  • I can come see you in the maternity ward of the hospital if you need me to. Ensuring an optimal latch from day one will set your breastfeeding relationship up for success.

  • Do not hesitate to reach out and book in a consult asap. Nipple pain is not normal and should not be present when baby’s latch is optimal. The sooner we can adjust, the faster your pain will go away.

  • Private antenatal classes are tailored exactly to your needs and can include natural or c-section birth preparation, postpartum recovery, care for your newborn and breastfeeding. Together we will create a program that suits you best.

Services

  • An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) specialises in supporting mothers during their breastfeeding journey. They need to have a healthcare background, go through extensive training relating to infant feeding and development and maternal, biology, and need to recertify every 5 years to ensure their knowledge stays up to date.

  • Yes and no. The title ‘lactation consultant’ is not protected, and anyone can practice under this title. To ensure you receive the best support, it is best to choose somebody who has the ‘IBCLC’ certification. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants receive their title from the only world-wide recognized certifying organization.

  • Certainly! Pumping is still breastfeeding, and with the right tools your pumping journey can also be a pleasant one. Together we can ensure you are using the correct size, speed and mode for pumping. I can also help recommend a variety of pumps that would suit your needs best.
